The way sport was played, promoted, and consumed changed radically over the course of the 20th decades. Corporations cash in on competitive sport as spectacle. Shaky beginnings of leagues in the very early 20th century. Sport leagues become more established from the interwar period football, rugby, baseball. Most owners were local businessmen, often a vanity investment. Most revenue came from gate receipts, some from radio. Cost came from the facility and then the players/coaches (efforts to keep contracts low) Owners acted like their was a private club. Postwar affluence did not lead immediately to expansion. British football clubs loses spectators following the war. The nfl struggled to survive, competition from afl. The nba reduced from 18 to 8 franchises first 4 years. The nl in baseball had only 8 teams in the 1950s. The nhl had only 6 teams from 1942 1967 (why didn"t it expand earlier?)
