HIST 3791 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Palpation, Perspiration, Sunburn
Document Summary
Hypothermia generalized coolness, can be used for surgical purposes or for high fevers. Hyperthermia generalized occurs with increased metabolic rates, such as fever, or heavy exercise. Localized area feels hyperthermic with trauma, infection or sunburn. Diaphoresis perfuse perspiration, accompanies increased metabolic rates, such as heavy activity or fever. Dehydration in oral mucous (look for this) not enough water. Normal skin feels smooth and firm with even surface. Callus thickened skin (overgrowth of epidermis adaptation to excessive pressure from friction) areas: palms and soles. Fluid accumulating in intercellular spaces, not present normally. Edema masks normal skin color and obscures pathological conditions such as jaundice or cyanosis because fluid lies between surface and pigmented and vascular layers. Turgor ability to return to place promptly when released. Color: hair color is due to melanin production (vary from pale blonde ~ black, greying of hair: reduced melanin production in the follicles. Texture: scalp hair: fine or thick / straight, curly, or kinky / shiny.
