1953- Stalin Died
1953-1955 - there was a successor crisis
Georgii Malenkov became premier
Nikita Krushchev became leader of the Soviet Party
By 1955 - Krushchev won the struggle for power until 1964 when he was forced to retired
- KRuschchev offered a "thaw" and talked about "peaceful coexistence"
- IN 1957 krushchev publicly denounced Stalin as a paranoid dictator who left the soviet union
unpreprared.
u2 Affair - A sply plane which was shot down by the soviets over their air space.
- The poliet powers was captured and was supposed to kill himself to avoid capture but didnt.
Eventually he admitted his guilt to 10 years of imprisonment but was allowed to return to the US in 1962
Joseph Mccarthy
- In 1950 decided to make a name for himself by creating a Red Scare. The fear of communism from the
US of communism taking over
- HE charged " the loss of china" from the infiltration of communism
- Mccarthys fear caused the loss of recognition of Communist china
- His tactics were retrospectively called "the big lie"
- He ruined thousand of American Lives
- He would attack others by labeling them disloyal without providing evidence
