HIST 3659 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Francisco I. Madero, Zapatismo, Liberal Democracy
Document Summary
Diaz regime placed mexico on a path of development. Consequences of economic growth is the creation of a middle class who demanded inclusion to participate in mexican politics. Foreign owned industries squeezed middle class mexicans out of jobs by bringing their own work force. In the last years of the diaz regime it became more nationalist because of influence from foreign powers. Diaz becomes more nationalist because he realizes that the united states is becoming too powerful. As a response to losing political control diaz becomes more abusive to his people. American interview where diaz states he will not run for re-election thinking that the mexican people will not hear of the interview but it became more popular in mexico than in the united states. Elites became less supportive of diaz and began to conspire against him. Very distant from the real problems in mexico. Terrible calculation in preserving the proferian national army.
