All three abrahamic religions lived in the balkan region during the reign of the ottoman empire: christians mostly, muslims. When the ottomans took over these areas, they removed the local elite and replaced them with loyal christians or their own muslim elite: loyal christians were called phanariots. From a district in the city of istanbul. Arab nationalism erupts in the ottoman empire. By the late 19th century, nationalism from every part of the empire, even among the turks, starts to form: turkish nationalism was called ottomanism and sought to support the empire. European powers were carving up the ottoman empire into spheres of influence: british had egypt, france had northern africa. Many areas in the ottoman empire were subject to their ottoman suzerains. Control throughout the empire strong near istanbul but weak near the periphery. Russians want to control the balkan regions through the idea of pan-slavism.
