History: lecture 16 + 17 (the galileo trail + Europe is highly strati ed socially, economically and politicly. The middle class emerged as a major group. There were more chances to grow in class to upper class levels. At the bottom of the social latter, was the masses. A group of people de ned by rights. Rights to arms/weapons, tax exemption, judicial treatment. 1786: only 22 of ces were non noble. They shunned all labor as a right. In spain: grandee (higher nobility) hidalgos (lower nobility) Wealth was the principle factor of nobility. This is an era in which there was an increase of commercial activity. Ownership of land was reserved for nobles. They engage in conspicuous consumption in another level. The 18th century also noticed cultural uniformity (it was new) The grand tour became a way for basic trends to be known all around europe. French was the main language of the continent because of france"s power and louis.
