Western medicine then began to be accepted by the japanese. Population increased by about 50% between 1600 and 1721, then levelled off. The yield from taxes on agriculture peaked before 1800. Choshu"s domain debts were equivalent to 20 year"s of domain income. Satsuma with 770,000 koku ; had a debt of 5 million koku by 1830. 1801: owari province, with an income of about 250,000 koku , was forced to borrow the cash equivalent of about 127,000 koku.
