Document Summary
Lecture 8: korea - the koryo dynasty [textbook: chapter 10] [note: * = most important for the next exam] In 1231: the mongols invade korea to secure a base for subjugating the southern song and japan; the mongols took over korea for a period of time. The mongols wanted to use korea as a stepping stone for taking over japan. The koreans did not want to be ruled by mongols; there was resistance. The koreans used several brave failed attempts to outrun the mongols. In 1272 the korean prince (king wonjong"s son) married khubilai"s daughter, the first of several intermarriages between mongols and korean kings. Intermarriage eventually diluted the korean aristocratic identity, while mongol identity was not. Korean aristocracy became mongolized in culture (supplanting korean culture) The mongols also brought their foreign administrators to korea. The mongols also put themselves on the top of the hierarchy, and the koreans on the bottom.
