There are people in every religion that withdraw from society with the means of getting closer to god. Communities of monks had difficulty regulating individual communities. Imposed a rule of sorts upon community in which he lived. Act in a way while still trying to maintain his own isolation. No direct communication with community and discouraged no communication with others in the community. Church authorities did not view the monks as clerics or lay people but something in between. Augustine of hippo viewed monks and the clergy as the same and eventually got the church to view them as the same under church structure. Casion was moved to the west and lived there for rest of his life. Honorius established a monastery on an island in gul. Took turns of being abbot of the monastery. Instead of being settled in monastic communities monks would travel around the world and form new communities often far away from where they studied originally.
