1811 red river colony colonists came to settle farms. Thomas douglas (lord selkirk) wanted economic help to mother colony and help displace scottish traders. Saw new france as a way to resettle scottish traders. Went to hudson"s bay to receive box at land that would be the colony for. Hard to establish because of tricky location. Hard to settle agriculture because of harsh climate. Main route was great lakes and trade inland and down hudson and trade at forts. As settlers came, nw company was not happy so start killing everyone because cutting off trade route access. Natives did not want to tell it at this time because they got more for it from the northwestern settlers. 1814 banned export of pemmican from colony so metis could not trade with northwestern company. 1818 organized nw company people to military to kill red river inhabitants. (metis wanted to help prevent land encroachment) 1815 forced colonists to abandon, set fire, stole provisions.
