1889 royal commission on the relations of labour and capital. Mainly in southern ontario and quebec/major urban centres. Industrialization involved 2 major transitions of people: nature of labour. Society directed to earning a wage: nature of energy use. Shift from organic to mineral sources of energy. Organic energy source derived almost directly from the sun (burning fuel wood, pulling stuff with a horse, pull stuff with the body each stuff that came from the sun) Nature of energy changes transition of work. What we use comes from natural sources. 3 elements: protective tariffs, railway, immigration. All three contribute to industrialization in the 19th century. Worked to support ontario and quebec industries. Promoted canadian colonial expansion and prevented us expansion. Struggled to transition to industrial manufacturing economy. Ns hoped to use these two as an advantage, and they did initially. After confederation and inter colonial railway was completed (1876) that linked maritime provinces to montreal.
