➢ Contemporary approach to increase population = encourage people to come
1. Immigration needed for country to exist
2. Investment – investing in people to come

- Religious order, develop post reformation period
- Felt religion was in danger so formed a religious order
- Spread the word of God
- Also became land lords and part of structure
➢ More settlers in English colonies than in France because:
1. English
- Industrial; revolution and private ownership
- British didn’t have futile system, French did
- Private property
- Work wages
2. France
- Pay rent to survive
- **French make more environmentally taxing
- **Main source of income was wheat and fur
