Need reception staff, rooms, etc: pope needs money but often expense is larger than income, there is anger about the pope"s demand for more money. Problem of the papal states: pope is the lord and secular leader of the middle 1/3 of italy, essential for cash flow and some measure of political independence, pope gets his hands dirty through warfare and administration. The babylonian captivity: between 1309-1378 the pope resides in avignon. Fleeing the increasingly complex politics in italy: avignon technically part of the hre but the popes buy it and build a palace, there is huge outcry. Favouritism to the french: avignon is actually a good place for business. No need to cross the alps to reach the pope. In 1378, gregory ix moves papacy back to rome. Promptly dies and sets up next crisis.
