vote is given to working-class men. These are liberal capitalist democracies
(democracies that are run towards capitalism). This entire system is unequal. Political
system despite huge political inequality works.
o Both countries are capitalist democracies but with large working-class populations.
o Popular culture is designed to make money. Designed to be sold to commercial
audience.
Themes:
o After the commune, class politics continues. There is still class tension, division and
great deal of inequality. Class politics finds its way in no revolutionary forms. Example,
trade unions.
o Deep class division and segregation; economic inequality.
o Finds new manifestations: socialist parties and trade unions.
o The city continues to be the focus of class politics.
o In London, the state involved itself in improving the conditions of working-class life. The
city is absolutely the focus of class politics.
o The beginning of welfare. State begins to intervene in working-class people. The reason
for it is because they are afraid of the working-class. They want to prevent potential
revolution.

Class Segregation: Paris

Who are the urban working classes?
o The variety of the working-classes. In France and Britain, working-class is a majority.
They lived in a society that was deeply unequal.

o Divisions between men and women.
o The poor.
o There is no one working class.
o Between 1810 and 1910, 10% of the European population controls 80 to 90% of all
wealth.

o That means, only 10 to 20% of all wealth has to be shared by 90% of the population.
How working class people experience inequality
