Basic structure of cinderella develops in 1st century bc. Greek historian and geographer strabo reported a tale in which a slipper belonging to a beautiful courtesan, rhodope, is dropped by an eagle into the lap of a pharaoh. Searches the whole kingdom to find the women who fit the slipper. Basic story is similar, magic is casted by fish bones, prince falls into rebellion against his soldiers. First version 1510; first telling of tale in europe. All euro stories share common element of having the main character"s name connected to ashes. Sitting in ashes is an expression of grief. Wrote for louis xiv"s court and cultivated public of the golden age of french classic literature. Decided to present the tales as fashions of the day rather than reflections of a timeless pass. Disney"s version is based on grimms" and perrault"s versions of the story.
