Week 17: the rise and fall of the aztec empire, 1250s- 1521. The valley of mexico in the centre of the present- day country of mexico, from the. 1100s to 1521 (the end of the three- year spanish conquest of mexico), was resplendent with a vast array of beautiful and populous cities and diverse cultures with sophisticated technology, art, and architecture. Although this period of mexican history is dominated by the story of the aztecs, the aztecs were not alone, but rather were one of many amazing cultures. With military and diplomatic skill, aztecs forged alliances with friends and conquered their enemies, and built one of the most powerful ancient north american empires. But they fell even more quickly than they rose when the spaniards arrived. They were descendants of people who had lived on monte alban. Mixtecs northwest of the zapotecs in western mexico. Mixtec codices which carries information about them for a 600-year period.
