Week 9: corn and the development of agriculture. The domestication of food occurred independently in a handful of places around the globe. The five definite places of independent food production are southwest asia, The four possible additional places of independent food production are sahel, tropical west africa, Local domestication following arrival of founder crops occurred in western europe, indus valley, and egypt. Food production systems (using domesticated plants and animals) evolved very slowly as the result of many small decisions about allocating time and effort. People sought to maximize their return of calories for their expenditure of energy with the greatest certainly, in the least amount of time, for the least effort. Likewise, food choices were shaped by cultural preferences. Although food production and hunting-- gathering were competing strategies, they were often practiced cooperatively. Over time, the benefits of food production led eventually to the wide-- spread adoption of food production in places that could sustain it.
