Ammophila has an ability to produce adventitious roots on the buried stems when it dies. It does not reproduce by seeds v. much. It is well adapted to sand environment, and it is restricted to shifting sand envts. Another species is the poplar species, populous salix spp. It consists of shrubs and fast growing shade- intolerant trees. Age, as well as other factors influence species growth of pioneer species. Cottonwood, for example, cannot occur near the water table. The history of blowouts, ie shifting sand disturbance helps redistribute the sand and topography. Old-field succession occurs in n. c. in the appalachians. Example: we have a barnfield which has corn growing over it, farmers left the fields.
