GEOG 1410 Lecture Notes - Lecture 53: Global Warming Potential
Document Summary
What is the evidence that it is occurring: global temperatures are rising. Observations collected over the last century suggest that the average land surface temperature has risen 0. 45-0. 6 c (0. 8-1. 0 f) in the last century: the surface of the ocean has also been warming at a similar rate. What is the greenhouse effect: the greenhouse effect is neither new nor necessarily bad. In fact, without the greenhouse effect, life as we know it would probably not exist on the earth: the greenhouse effect is the warming of the earth"s surface from heat trapped in the atmosphere. What is the global warming potential of different greenhouse gases: each greenhouse gas differs in its ability to absorb heat in the atmosphere. Methane: this is produced when bacteria break down organic matter without oxygen being present, these bacteria are most productive in waste dumps, swamps, animal dung, paddy fields and the guts of cattle.
