Hurricane Irma - 10 million displaced in Florida, 90% structures destroyed in Barbuda
Geography is a broad discipline, study of the earth’s surface, from atmosphere to surface
Areal Differentiation - examines the processes that give rise to differences and similarities
from place to place (interdependence)
How have those differences and similarities emerged in the first place and how those
processes change the earth’s surface
Kiribati (Keira-bass) - the first place in the world that will disappear because of the rise of sea
levels
Fires are more of a threat to Australia than rising sea levels. Kiribati and Aust. are in the
same region but affected vastly different by climate change
Environmental refugees are not accepted by the New Zealand Government.
Anaximander’s Map (5th C. BCE)
The world’s 7 continents - Antarctica is not considered a continent
Continents are arbitrary - they reflect a European perspective. They’re very static and do not
offer revision as we learn more about the earth’s surface.
The 1st world - US and allies
2nd - Soviet Union and its allies
3rd - All of the parts of the world that were not industrialized at the time - 60’s, 70’s, seen as
not modern.
Emerged from Cold War Politics, came to represent economic divisions, static and out of
date
So called third world countries were the most economically on the rise (Brazil, India, China)
The West and The East
Reinforces stereotypes
“The West” is powerful, wealthy, advanced, a place of reason and democracy
“The East” is weak, poor, not completely human, backward, undemocratic. A reflection of the
height of European colonialism.
Over-generalizes and static.
