Energy Policy
● Bloc loyalty - western Nations and with the US, Eastern nation and Russian loyalty
● Free market loyalty - Russia welcomed to the capitalist world system
● Territorial Security - began in 2004; we built gas pipelines due to this loyalty, a lot of
these pipelines pass through the Ukraine - have become unreliable capitalist partners

● Major transit country for energy supplies
● 2006 gas crisis, argument with the price of oil and gas with Russia; Hungary,
Germany, Italy, all had gas shortages
● 2009, Russia stopped supplying oil and gas to the Ukraine
● 2014, Ukraine shut down supplies
● The production of electricity is dependant upon oil and gas
● Increasing insecurity
● A multicultural state

● 1921 - Crimean Soviet Republic - became independent - Stalin suppressed Crimean

● 1954 - Gave Crimea to the Ukraine
● 1991 - autonomous republic within Ukraine - equivalent to a province

● Dec. 2013 - Feb. 2014: Ukraine anti-government protests
● Feb. 26 2014: Crimea occupied by soldiers wearing no identifying markers, every
tank and vehicle unmarked, over time Russia began talking about a referendum
● Mar. 16, 2014: Crimea referendum
● Mar. 18, 2014: Russia annexed Crimea, Putin makes an appearance
