European Imperialism
Review
Unions represent a counterweight to lowering of incomes. Sometimes unions are not
successful. The loss of unions may represent higher inequality.
Two main causes for growing wealth and income inequality:
● Economic restructuring - technology change may make some jobs obsolete.
● Changing welfare state - the state must act. Governments are not giving the proper
amounts of welfare to allow individuals to earn a living wage or be able to afford
education and health care.
People who are capable to go to university but unable to afford it are much less likely than
those who come from a wealthy family.
Change in public education: huge reduction in spending.
Inequality is gendered and racialized.
Region of Europe
We think of Greece, Castles, etc.
A region known for wars and exploration. A region of the world now know for a lot of political
protest. A region of the world experiencing a tremendous stress from immigration.
Disputed and often changing eastern boundary.
Climate
● Maritime coastal climate = wet all the time. Proximity to the ocean and gulf stream
current. UK, France, Germany
● Continental Midlatitude = drier.
● Mediterranean climate = much warmer, very dry in the summer, precipitation in the
winter
● Highland mountains
● Subtropical
Physical Geography
● Northwestern Uplands
● North European lowlands, ideal for cultivation, may coal deposits under land
● Central Plateau - Spain. Mostly olives, goats, pasture, not much cultivation.
● Alpine System - Alps, most of Italy is mountains.
We usually always use a map that makes Europe seem bigger than it actually is.
Europe in the World System
Wallerstein
● He said that the world is linked through Global economic processes.
● In the core we have high income societies with high levels of profitability
