Films from a typical genre are tied to specific expectations (ex: the location of horror films) Some successful films have hybrid/multiple characteristics (ex: titanic is romantic, drama, and a disaster movie) Overtime, the popularity of genres change between 1903 and 1960, the most popular films were western. After 1960, western declines and now they have essentially disappeared. Gangster films were really popular in the 30s and then went into a decline and then came back in the 70s and are still popular today. At its root, the central conflict in the western is the attempt to displace the disorder of the wild frontier with some sort of order. Civilization: the east, heterosexual family, whites, women, city. Savagery (disorder: male gants (outlaws, natives and hispanics, men, country (nature) Characteristics of the western: setting: 1865-1900, the american west, character types and their relationship to each other: The natives or outlaws who threaten the first group.
