The conventions of the crime genre: g-man cycle, private eye, film noir, police movies, detective mysteries, crime melodramas, mob movies, lovers on the run, serial killer, slasher. Hollywood musicals gave viewers hope and courage, entertainment. Crime films gave viewers were realism and escapism. Realism - providing the real sense of organized crimes. People are desperate without work and wages so they turn to crime. There are shortages, so people get resources from the black market which are fronted by the organized crimes. Providing escapism, through the action sequences, hunt and capture, reach the top and getting power, and living the life that viewers can only dream of. Historical - action/adventure continuing the western tradition of violence. The big city and the big city values. These actions and desires are opposite to those of moral society. That is violence that is not permitted or acceptable. Chaos and anarchy that contravenes the social order.
