Today"s musical selection is hot topic by le tigre. Le tigre seem like a good choice for today. They were an american riot grrrrl band - so part of the feminist punk movement which was anti-capitalist and anti-corporate (alongside bands like bikini kills, sleater kinney etc). Diy aesthetic (the video has a zine-like aesthetic) and it was informed by a desire for revolution. Because today we are thinking about feminism and rethinking conceptions of gender, i think hot topic in particular is a good fit because the song is pretty weird, right?! It is basically just a list of famous and not-so-famous feminists (which isn"t generally the kind of content you find in songs). But part of what our theorists for today are doing is seeking a way to recover and restore knowledge of women. Le tigre also include some men in their lists, which suggests that they see beyond the limitations of sex categories.
