Document Summary

Structuralism: expressions of structure (saussure continued), todorov, frye. Saussure also wouldn"t have called himself a structuralist - as i said last time he was a swiss linguist. But his ideas formed the basis of structuralism: you should also definitely note that frye isn"t normally considered a structuralist. However, his way of thinking through a text uses some of the ideas of structuralism. In my experience of teaching this course, structuralism generally doesn"t speak to most students. So i want to assure you: that"s okay! If you"re more in the i don"t really get it space - know that is the space most of us occupy when talking about structuralism: however, i put todorov on the course not to make anyone"s life hard! Rather, we need to understand the basics of structuralism so that we can understand poststructuralism - which is one of the most dominant literary theories today.
