Document Summary

The romantics and the victorians: wordsworth, shelley, and arnold. I think mia"s borders is a really good fit for today. These are not topics generally found in mainstream pop music - but here, we have a song and a video which is restoring dignity to people who are often denied it. Another excellent musical choice for today"s readings is simon and garfunkel"s sounds of silence . Sounds of silence is about the power of visions and the need for those visions. Really, both of these songs combined i think evoke a lot of elements of the romantics! Political context: wordsworth (1770-1850) was part of the first generation of romantics. This generation was inspired by the revolutions taking place in america (1776) and france (1789). These revolutions were caused by a sense of injustice. There were a number of factors that led to these revolutions but just to take one example: people were heavily taxed.
