From user"s pov a file is a named collection of data that is. Stored and maintained over long periods of time (data longevity) Easily accessed by a user or a group of users. Accurate and consistent over its entire life cycle, particularly in the case of system crashed and failures (data integrity) Can be plain text or other binary data, such as images, music, videos. Files store data to be used w/specific application (excel, word) Describes the file type of kind of data contained in the file. Operating system associates file extensions w/program (application) meant to open the file. Does not guarantee that the contents of a file conform to that type. Changing the file extension does no change file format. Often depicted graphically in os (operating system) Logical, tree diagram view of a file system. Root directory: highest level in file system. Parent directory: containing the subdirectory being referenced. Working directory: location you are currently working in or viewing.
