Document Summary
Analog: continuous (smooth) representation, analogous to actual info it represents. Infinite steps, or infinite value between 2 points. Digital: discrete representation, breaking info up into separate elements. Well defined values between points, has a min and a max. Truncation: converts infinite value range to a finite one. Binary digit (bit) basis for representing digital info. A bit holds one of 2 values: 0 or 1. Often combined in groups of 8 (group if 8 is called a byte) Decimal is base 10 and has 10 digit symbols (0-9) Binary is base 2 and has 2 digit symbols (0,1) For a value to exist in a given base, it can only contain the digits in that base, which range from. 0 to the base (not including the base). 0+1 = 1 with a carry of 1. 1+1 = 0 with a carry of 1.
