Characteristics and examples of situational crime prevention (scp): Concerned with offence, not offender opportunity reduction. Focus on narrowly focused prevention on adding/changing the environment: cctv. This has led to criticism of social control by not aiming to prevent the root causes of crime. Does not mean that this approach is not effective in reducing crime: clark recommends these longer term strategies can be complimentary to situational crime prevention. Situational crime prevention is a short term that is good to do while figuring out the long term: situational crime prevention has a more attainable goal because it is short term and narrowly focused. Grocery store receives security measures, unlikely people would go shop lift at a further location: critique of escalation: if people were shop lifting at a grocery store with guards, its unlikely they will go and escalate their crimes. Because of this, escalation does not occur very often.
