Justice involves the victim, the offender and the community in a search for solutions which promote repair, reconciliation and reassurance: retributive lens crime is a violation of the state, defined by law breaking and guilt. Justice determine blame and administers pain in a contest between the offender and the state directed by systemic rules. Interests not addressed: excluded except as witnesses, lack of voice, not enough communication, structural exclusion. Restorative ideals: repair harms and we can restore that harm, address needs, restore social bonds, promote harmony, collaborative, inclusionary process, involve the offender, victim and community, offender acceptance of responsibility. The victim of a crime, member of a community are actively involved with deciding the punishment for the crime. There are formal inequalities and power relationships in communities. Ex. in class the professor is higher than us. They are not necessarily safe for everyone: community involvement is better for everyone in the indigenous community (quote on slide)
