Document Summary

Lecture 5: chapter 7 the social disorganization perspective. Move is to study society and its impact on people"s behaviour. Society causes/determines people"s behaviour individually and in a group setting (sociological determinism) Because we all agree that what happened is a crime: not interested in crime or punishment. But when there is too much crime then there is a problem, means the society is becoming disorganized. When a lot of people stop following the rules then it leads to the downfall of the society. Method: sociological positivism, societies can be studied like natural organisms b. Idea is that as society becomes more complex we develop more institutions and structure to preserve forward progress: structural functionalism, every society at every stage seeks to preserve/sustain itself. Does this through a particular form of solidarity something everyone can believe in (including following the rules) For durkheim, societies evolve because of material changes: Examples: development of capitalism/industrialization, population growth/density, mass mobility.
