COMN 2200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Market Failure
Document Summary
Looked at state influence on media a owner. The state can play a constructive or manipulative role. Can also be a blend between the 2. How the media and the state interact depends on the ideological perspective. Sees the medias role as providing public space for discussion/on going discussion for groups. Assumption that in a pre-market place (market place of ideas) the truth will emerge automatically (prof: assumption worth questioning) Theory: should encourage medias to flourish in all categories/platform. Variation of liberal pluralist and corruption of that notion: medias role is to maintain existing power structures. Best thing you can do is set up a system where minimum coercion is used. Theory: corruption should want to keep media stable. In most capitalist markets they tend to lean towards monopoly. Liberal market ideology/theory/libertarian has no place for any government enterprise/ intervention unless they cannot do the job.
