BIOL 4380 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Schaffer Collateral, Cpeb, Apical Dendrite
Document Summary
Long term sensitization, the first mechanism: catalytic subunit is phosphorylating creb. Creb is a transcription factor that activates transcriptional mechanisms: ubiquitin hydrolase an enzyme facilitates degradation of pka regulatory subunit. The positive feedback loop of activated pka,,,, which establishes sensitization and doesn"t allow synaptic arrangement to escape sensitization: c/ebp also very long term. Phosphorylated creb targets c/ebp which targets other things that help with the growth of synapses: cpeb also phosphorylated by activated pka, cpeb is not a transcription factor but it regulates mrnas. Cpeb is inhibited by mechanisms that also help with the growth of synapses: mechanisms 2 and 3 promote long term formation of additional synapses between the 2 neurons. By inhibiting the translation and see that long term sensitization is gone: other model organisms have been employed recently: fruit fly, due to the genetic info that we have on the fruit flies. Read this box in the book: the model in terms of mammalian synaptic plasticity: hippocampus.
