John scopes, science teacher was a defendant for this in the court of law. He ended up arrested, was defended by american civil liberties union. Case broadened to debate over whether evolution and religion could co-exist. This is where creationism and scientific creationism arose from. The origin of species resounded with people during the industrial revolution b/c it epitomized the struggle for life. Natural law was used as the basis for a given view of society in a social, political and economical context in 19th century.
