Document Summary

Immune system for defending against microbes, clean debris, prepare for tissue repair. Innate: nonspecific & no selectively defend against foreign material. Viruses: protein coated nucleic acids which invade host cells & take over metabolic machinery fro their own survival. Inflammation: nonspecific response to invasion or tissue damage assisted by phagocytes. Histamine induced vasodilation increased blood flow to site of injury more leukocytes at damaged site. Inflamation results in swelling, redness, heat & pain. Interferon: released by virus infected cells & inhibit viral multiplication by other cells. Exerts anticancer effects by slowing division & growth of tumour cells. It inhibits viral infection on other cells: natural killer (nk) non specifically lyse & destroy virus infected & cancer cells on first exposure. Lymphocytes have specific receptors that bind to specific antigen: classes of adaptive immunity: antibody mediated (humoral) & cell mediated, b-lymphocytes mature in bone marrow; t-lympocytes mature in thymus.
