BIOL 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Genetic Drift, Allele Frequency

8 views3 pages

Document Summary

Gene ow can actually counteract e ects of genetic drift and selection because while the alleles are changing in natural selection, gene ow is replenishing those genes bringing everything back to being similar. Gene ow doesn"t grab an equal group from a population, it just grabs random organisms and takes them to another population. The alleles that come from gene ow aren"t usually adapted to new conditions. Gene ow is a ected by: space: the further apart two populations are, the less chance there is for gene ow, barriers: water or mountains, temporal obstructions: for example say you have two populations of bird species. 1 is nocturnal and the other is awake during the day, they will never end up mating because they mate at di erent times. Distance is not the same problem for all species: it depends on the dispersal distance the organism is capable of. Gene ow can make allele frequencies across populations more similar.
