Document Summary

Fossil record provide lots of info about the origins of different groups. Half-way through earths history we have oxygen. Of earths history we have photosynthesis. Biogeographical similarities between extinct & extant species. Ex: glyptodont (extinct) & armadillo (extant) are from same region of south america- one lived in the past & other is found today. Relative dating is when you done need to know the absolute age of the rock. Its based on the principle of super position. There are older layers at the bottom and newer layers at the top. Within these different layers you find different fossils. Fossils in layers are used to determine age relative to layers. Relative dating is the science of determining the relative order of past events (age of objects in comparison to another) without necessarily determining their absolute age (estimate age). Arrange geological events & the rocks they leave behind in a sequence. Do not actually provide actual numerical data for rocks.
