BIOL 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Absolute Dating, Relative Dating, Continental Drift
Document Summary
Evidence: species change through time & common ancestry. Transitional forms link older & newer species. Transitional forms: fossil species with traits intermediate between those of older & newer species. In living, we see change in populations of living organism- correlated with changes in environment. Individuals with certain traits are selected for mating. After being repeated for many generations, characteristics of populations are altered compared to initial population. Groups of organisms that are restricted to certain parts of earth is consistent with view that they evolved in one place. Some species are located in limited locations. Continental drift shapes earth & drives evolution & extinctions. Some species are found in limited locations- as shown by fossil distribution. Biogeography is the study of distribution of life forms over geographical area. It provides significant evidence for evolution & common descent. Homology: similarity that exists b/t two or more species as a result of sharing common ancestry.
