BIOL 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Interspecific Competition, Niche Differentiation, Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis
Document Summary
Community populations of different species (species constantly interacting) Chapter 13 (selected sections) ecology & biodiversity. Biol 1001 symbiosis lecture week 12 (march 28 april 1) Canadian issues 1 & 2, canadian research 1. Competition occurs when individuals use the same resources resulting in lower fitness for both (-/-) Consumption occurs when one organism eats or absorbs nutrients from another. The interaction increases the consumer"s fitness but decreases the victim"s fitness (+/-) Mutualism occurs when two species interact in a way that confers fitness benefits to both (+/+) Commensalism occurs when one species benefits but the other is unaffected (+/0) Competition lowers the fitness of the individuals: when competitors use resources, those resources are not available to help individuals survive better and produce more offspring. Intraspecific (within) competition occurs between members of the same species: competition intensifies as a population density increases (major cause of density- dependent growth)
