Document Summary

Adherens junctions: associated w/ microfilament portion of cytoskeleton. Hold portions of two plasma membranes very tightly together. Channels, composed of protein, through plasma mem. Permit passage of ions and small molecules b/w adjacent cells of same type. Isolated system: no energy exchange, no matter exchange (universe) Closed system: exchange energy, no matter exchange (earth) Open system: exchange energy and matter (cell) Enthalpy (h): internal energy, total potential energy. Gibbs free energy (g): portion of system"s energy that is available to do work (convertible energy) Free energy in products - free energy in reactants. Negative delta g: products have less free energy than reactants. Systems begin in less stable state and are spontaneous. Positive delta g: more free energy in products than reactants. Systems are more stable at starting pt, not spontaneous. Entropy (s): how spread out energy is, indicates the energy that is not useable for work. Sum of all chemical reactions in the body.
