Document Summary

Biol 1000 lecture #4 light and the eye. It is an organ that animals/humans use to sense light. The difference between the eye of organism and c-reinhardtii is vision. Detailed visual processing occurs in the brain, not the eye. The simplest eye is called the ocellus. It consists of 100 photoreceptor cells lining in a cup. Each ocellus is blocked by a layer of pigment cells that absorb most of the light. Image-forming eyes are found in either compound eyes and single-lens eyes. Compound eyes are common in insects, each containing thousands of. It allows them to detect slightest of motion. Single lens eyes [camera eyes] allow light to enter through the cornea and to a layer of photoreceptors at the back called retina, which records the image. Darwin suggests that the eye that exist in humans did not appear suddenly but evolved from variations and natural selection over time.
