Hip hop is among the top music that is being listened to today. Prior to this, country music had the top spot. Popular music is an important part of society, and is shaped by society. In the 1890s, there was the origin of popular music. There were three types of musical genres coming out at this time. This happened because in 1890, there was the first generation that was born without the oppression of slavery, and therefore had the freedom to express themselves. The beginnings of hip hop are actually a first for women, because it was founded and started off by women. Although men today dominate the industry, and have been doing so for quite some time, they were not the first to rap or produce hip hop music. What is unique about the history of hip-hop is that it is a genre that has been completely documented from its very beginning.
