Key concepts: trans studies in anthropology the term transgender is use broadly by anthropologists. Since the 90s in has become more specific and fixed. Lesbi (formed from lesbian) does not mean lesbian though: west sumatra, indonesia tombois use their body the transgress gender binary norms. What it means to be a man in indonesia is supposed to be very masculine. While these tombois dress like men they also act like them: tomboi express a sense of self which relates to genders. Perform their gender through talking, dress etc. a certain way to express their gender identity. They frame themselves: subjectivity and embodiment - subjectivity partially experienced physical or a bodily experience. The bodily aspects of one"s subjectivity which are the physical experiences: body knowledge (210) it is your gut, what feels right or wrong (below the level of consciousness). Emphasizing the physical aspect of them (gut feelings) our feelings our felt in our body.
