Focused on research on rapid expansion of ivf technologies in this region of muslim world did anthro field work in egypt and lebanon. In most muslim countries, islamic religious proclamations called fatwas have affected practice of ivf that are not commonly seen in west. Infertile couples concerned about making test-tube babies in islamically correct way. There are differences b/w sunni and shi"a islam w/ regard to third-party gamete donation. A fatwa on medically assisted reproduction was released in 1980. In sunni islam world then it is widely accepted and practiced and most of muslim population is sunni: artificial insemination w/ husband"s semen is allowed, no third party should intrude into martial functions of sex/procreation. Use of a third party even for sperm/egg is zina (adultery: all forms of surrogacy are forbidden, sperm banks forbidden. In sunni-majority countries, prohibitions against gamete donation have been enacted through law or in professional medical codes of ethics.
