Religion and a belief in the supernatural developed through people"s efforts to explain basic phenomena like death and dreaming. People must"ve made a reasoning to make sense of these things and from that would for e. g. come the belief that a soul animates the body. He also said that"s why people in some languages have the same word to describe breath and soul. Once people believed in souls, they thought of where departed souls stayed and how some souls would become gods. Humans developed these in attempts of human beings to explain certain events to understand why things happen the way they do. Anthro. gists proposed that religious beliefs served some purpose = beliefs and rituals may have increased group cohesion or gave supernatural approvals for violation of group norms.
