How different cultures understand health and wellbeing. Health is a state of complete physical, social and mental well-being and not merely the absence of disease. Different societies have different understandings of illness and ascribe different meanings to health conditions. Medical anthropology is a subfield of anthropology that studies health and well-being cross- culturally. Medical anthropologists try to captures the insider"s point of view & experiences of illness (emic perspective). They distinguish between the terms illness, disease, and sickness. they also analyze western medicine and emergent biotechnologies. Shamanism is a healing system that is practiced by different societies (e. g. hmong). A shaman uses different rituals to travel to the spirit world in order to determine the cause of a person"s illness and to evoke healing. Use of drugs/singing/dancing/etc to travel to spirit world.
