Sociocultural change has been understood, particularly through the term progress and the privilege of tech as its main driver. The commonsensical understanding of progress is problematic when examining culture change through time. Tech and contemporary ways of living in the global north are not inherently better than other ways of living. There are a range of livelihood strategies those predominant in the global north are not inherently better in terms of environmental costs in terms of nutrition for the majority of people living there.
