Perceptions
What is Perception?
-The process by which individuals select, organize and interpret their impressions to give
meaning to their environment.
Why is perception important at work?
-How we perceive others/situations will influence how we respond to those
others/situations
-A person will behave in ways consistent with how he or she is perceived by others.
-Your boss/teacher treats you based on their perception of you.
othe boss thinks YOU are talented & treats you as if you are talented by
complimenting you and offering support etc.
oIf your boss does not think you’re talented, you might start to believe it and
unconsciously start doing worse or have no motivation to do better because you
feel like there’s no use in trying.
-The boss’s perceptions and attitudes toward you can create a self- fulfilling prophecy.
oThe Pygmalion Effect: A manager’s perceptions of the subordinate will affect
attitudes/treatment of the subordinate which will in turn influence subordinate
self-perceptions and ultimately performance.
-A number of factors operate to shape and sometimes distort perception.
oThe Perceiver who is affected by personal characteristics such as attitudes,
personality, motives, interests, past experiences, and expectations.
oThe Target who is affected by "what we see," attractive or unattractive
individuals, novelty, motion, sounds, size, and other attributes of a target shape
the way we see it
oThe Situation which is the context in which we see objects or events. The
situation is important as elements in the surrounding environment influence our
perceptions. The time at which we see an object or event can influence
attention, as can location, light, heat, or any number of situational factors.
