ADMS 2400 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Xenobiotic, Dermis, Subcutaneous Tissue
Document Summary
Chemicals may enter the body by one of 4 routes of entry: Respiration (inhalation), skin absorption, ingestion, and skin penetration. Dose: amount of substance administered at one time. Systemic toxin: affects the whole body not just a specific site. Specific organ toxin: affects specific tissue or organ. Acute exposure: getting exposed to a lot of chemicals at once. If i didn"t get out the acute exposure would have killed me right away. Chronic exposure: low dose for a long period of time. Absorption: the process whereby a substance moves from outside the body into the body. Skin (dermal): three main layers = epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Distribution: movement of a substance from the site of entry to other parts of the body. Bioaccumulate: the build-up of a substance in a biological organism such that the level in the organism is greater than in the environmental source of the substance.
